Join the Current 2026 Photo Book Club
Join a community of curious photographers for The Photographer’s Book Club—a unique monthly workshop where image-makers meet the written word. Together, we’ll explore a wide range of books, essays, and articles on photography, creativity, art, and visual culture.
Each month we’ll gather to discuss the ideas and insights from our shared reading, drawing connections between the written text and our own photographic practices.
Whether it’s a deep dive into theory, a fresh perspective from a contemporary artist, or a short essay that challenges the way we see, the goal is simple: to spark conversation, inspiration, and reflection that feeds our work.

What will the group meetings be like?
At the first of the month, I will send out the text we will be reading. In some cases, this might be articles and selections I send you, in other cases it might be a book that you will need to check out of the library or purchase to read.
On or about the 15th of each month, I will send out some, not all, of the qeustions for discusss for the reading that month. These questions will hopefully help you think about the work and better prepare for our online disucssion.
The last week of the month, we will meet over zoom and have a discussion about the readings. Each session will also end with some to-do actions for you to take to apply the readings into your own work.

What might we be reading?
All sorts of stuff. We might read some of the more challenging text like Camera Lucida by Roland Barthe or parts of On Photography by Susan Sontag.
We might read history, critique, or all about current views on contemporary photography. So much as been written over the years about photography, we have a lot of options. Great writers like Minor White, Robert Adams, Charlotte Cotton, Teju Cole, Susan Bright, Ariella Azoulay and so many others gives us a rich set of text and ideas to read and discuss.
Do I have to read or are there movies of these things?
Nope you have to read, we will not be looking at photography movies. However, there are several great movies with photographers.
Do I have to buy the books?
Yes, for most sessions you’ll need to purchase or borrow a copy of the selected book—we’ll provide the title in advance so you have time to get it. Whenever possible, we choose widely available and affordable books, and we’ll include links to help you track them down.
In addition to books, we’ll occasionally read shorter essays or articles, which will be provided as PDFs or links at no extra cost.
What happens if I don't read the book?
No worries! Life gets busy, and you’re still welcome at the discussion. While reading ahead will definitely deepen your experience, our conversations are designed to be inclusive and engaging whether you’ve read every page or are just curious to listen in. You might be surprised how much you take away just by being part of the discussion.
Are the exercise you suggest after the discussion based on the readings?
Yes they are. I try to make suggestions from the readings that you can hopefully consider as part of your work.
What happens if I sign up and then want to quit. Are there refunds?
The short answer is we don’t provide refunds on workshops, classes and courses.
Our approach is that your payment for the program is a commitment to participate, just as it is our commitment to provide the best experience possible. It is a commitment on both our parts.
