Know anyone famous

Capture

I got sent an email this am from a good friend of mine who wanted to know if I wanted to hang out with a celebrity. Turns out his son was cast in a commercial for Black Rapid this holiday season. You can catch it here as he catches Santa.

Last days of fall

djgphoto_endofFall-1042

So cold out As the grey clouds begin there consumption the Pacific Northwest, the last of the leaves have fallen from most of the trees. As I wandered the streets with a camera, I realized that it was the sounds of the leaves at my feet rather than over my head that let me know [...]

From the bookshelf part 2

IMAG0431

Here is the next collection of 10 books from my bookshelf project that started last week. Each of these books are from my bookshelf in my office that I have found as an amazing source of inspiration  support, or help over the years. While a lot of books I have purchased end up being one hit [...]

11 great photography books part 1

IMAG0431

A mini projet developed as I am getting ready to paint my office and with the addition of new bookshelves in the house. As a result, I have had to move and organize the various photography books I have collected over the years. That got me thinking that I could share the ones that really [...]

Thinking about black and white images

A fine art black and white print of an orchid

I was looking back at some old images and came across this image of a orchid. I was just messing around with an orchid that was in the house, but as I got more and more into it. I started to think about how this image needed to be photographed in black and white. There [...]

Crowd Sourced Art

Post No Bills Crowd Sourced Street Art

I love when people are able to find unique ways to create art in the city. I was walking back to the hotel in Vancouver, BC and cut up through Yaletown and found this absolutely fun wall. Can’t wait to circle back and see the famous Pauls.

PSW Photo Safari Redux

_DJG9562

Well, I jumped at the chance to do the NAPP Photo Safari again with Moose Peterson and Joe McNally at Photoshop World. We had the privilege of getting to work with the fine people of the Bonnie Springs Ranch. They are such wonderful people to get to spend time with again. They are willing to [...]

A new lesson learned (Critique)

CrowdSourcing Image #10

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a blind critique session. If you haven’t ever done one before you basically submit your work and a person or group of people provide feedback about the work. The interesting aspect of the process is that the feedback is done in isolation without any dialog between the [...]

Sticking with the Friendship Archway

DJG_DCChinatown-001-2

I am continuing to work on my images from a recent trip to Washington D.C. One evening we headed down into Chinatown for some dinner and came to the intersection with the Friendship archway. According to the wonderful community over at wikipedia: “The colorful, US$1 million work of public art includes seven roofs up to 60 feet high, [...]

Photoshop World 2012 Day 2 quotes

It is sort of a tradition of mine to post out some of my favorite quotes I hear on day two of Photoshop World. You might wonder why I do this for the second day two of a multiple day conference, if not you can skip ahead to the quotes section below. First, the conference’s [...]

Returning to Black and White

Chair

This week I am teaching a quick overview of shooting in black and white to my intro to photography class. It has been some fun work getting the lecture ready for a little history of photograph, zone system and seeing in black and white. I wanted to show some examples in class of my own [...]

“Close to Home” workshop

coffee-1-6

Last week I participated in a workshop led by Stuart Sipahigil and Ray Ketcham called “Close to Home” in Port Townsend, WA (which is actually close to my home in Seattle). The workshop was based on the Craft and Vision book by Stuart of the same name. I had planned to do a review on [...]

10 things I learned on day one of Photoshop World

That there are amazing mentors that you get to interact with here. Jeremy Cowart’s  presentation on Making a Difference with your Photography was amazing and inspirational. The stories he shared about the people he worked with in Haiti and Africa put tears in my eyes and made me really feel the power that our images [...]

It’s all about the light and gesture

PhotoSafari_DJG-4

Today was the first day of the Photoshop World Conference. Well actually it was the pre-conference workshops, and I attended the Photo Safari that was put on by Moose Peterson and Joe McNally. This is my second time attending a photo safari with Moose and Joe and much like the prior time, this was a great [...]

Nelson Nevada Rocks

Nelson_DJG-3-3

I am in Las Vegas for my annual trek to Photoshop World. Although the conference starts on Tuesday with my photo shoot with Joe McNally and Moose Peterson, (along with 60 of my closest friends) this year I came down extra early to Vegas for a couple of reasons. The first is that I needed [...]

Why I spent the day with Zack Arias

DjG_OneLight-1

On Wednesday this week, I had the privilege to take part in Zack’s One Light Workshop in Seattle. This wasn’t my first time to get to meet and listen to Zack. I have seen him at Photoshop World, watched his course on Creative Live and I own a copy of his DVD. You could say [...]

Developing a mission

wpid744-DanieljGregoryMissionPost-2.jpg

A few weeks ago, I was in Maine at a workshop by John Paul Caponigro on creativity. It was a great opportunity to learn about exploring ways to see things and great exercises to push the envelop on what makes us artist. Along the way we got to have some great conversations about art, photography, [...]

Review of RC Concepcion Book Getting your Photography on the Web

I think that writing a book is one of the hardest things someone can do. Partly because if takes a huge amount of discipline and dedication to a single subject, and partly because I have a learning disability that makes writing a challenge. So both of those things have always had me in a little [...]

Focusing on what matters

wpid720-wheatfield-3.jpg

There are times that I find myself driving on backroads somewhere searching for something that peaks my interest enough to get out of the car with my camera and create a photograph. Most of the time, I find myself seeing something, getting exciting and shooting the entire scene. Rarely, are these shots the photo that [...]

Fairhaven Window Shopping

On a recent trip to Bellingham Wa, I was out shooting in Fairhaven during the early evening. On this particular night, it was pretty windy and rainy so I took to shooting a lot of storefronts seeking protection under the awnings. I have been shooting storefronts for a number of years now using Kodak VC [...]

Gray days and winter storms

Today in Seattle, it is a vey gray day. Even at 10am the street lights are on in some neighborhoods, and my car automatically turned on the nighttime driving lights when I went out. The day is a reflection of my state of mind. No matter what I look at or think about with my [...]

Alabama Mud

I am reminded of the classic movie My Cousin Vinny and the scene when Vinny gets his Caddie stuck in the mud. And, anyone who has been stuck in the mud in Alabama knows that no matter hard you hit the gas your tires just keep spinning. My photography is in the Alabama mud. When [...]

10 things

A day shouldn’t go by where you do not take a photo The best photographs are images that surprise in imagination and inspire the next image. Photography what you love and love what you photograph. Even if no one else understands your relationship. I have 9 cameras and not once have they ever photographed anything [...]

End of the Show

This past week I had to take down my gallery show. It was a strange punctuation on the experience. The show was titled Immersion: Experienced Spaces and it was a series of images done in platinum and palladium using an 8×10 view camera. The project took about 12 months to complete and was in the [...]
